Bryant Elementary, blew the lid off a silent crisis with district-wide reach—a failure to protect children that touched every part of family life. Children with asthma went without care, parents were pulled from work, and families risked separation by child protective services. What began as a fight for a nurse became a fight for the right to learn, to work, and to keep families together. We organized across schools to expose the neglect and won 98% citywide nurse coverage through parent power and cross-chapter solidarity.
We organized.
We built new chapters in the schools that needed it most. At-large members, many of whom had nurses in their schools, stepped up to say: this isn’t just your fight—it’s ours too. We made the crisis visible. We shared testimony. We canvassed schoolyards. We ran phone banks and hosted community dinners. We demanded meetings with District leaders and pushed for real accountability.
And when one school got a nurse, we didn’t stop.
We kept going—until every LEV chapter school had full-time coverage, and the District adopted a citywide plan.
This wasn’t about staffing. It was about justice, safety, and the dignity every child deserves.
What We Did
- Called every Philadelphia school to identify where nurses were missing
- Held community meetings, phone banks, and petition drives to build power
- Collected family stories that exposed the human cost of neglect
- Built four new chapters in neighboring schools that also lacked nurses
- Met with District leadership and demanded accountability
- Worked in cross-chapter solidarity to move the entire system
What We Won
Full-time nurses in every LEV chapter school
Major hiring process reforms and accelerated nurse placement
A 98% citywide nurse coverage rate, per District data
A public reckoning with the hidden crisis of nurse vacancies
This is the LEV way: start local, move together, and don’t stop until every child gets what they need.
Organizing is hard. But living in a city without it is harder. We trusted our people—and we changed what was possible.
